Former WWE champion Joanie Laurer, aka Chyna was found dead in her Redondo Beach apartment on Wednesday night after a friend went to check on her when she would not return his text messages from days prior. She was found unresponsive in her bed, she was only 45 years old.
Chyna had an extensive history of substance abuse ever since retiring from wrestling after claiming the Women’s Championship title in 2001 making history as one of the first woman wrestlers to go up against men in the ring. She was dubbed the “Ninth Wonder of the World” for her impact on the sport and superhuman physique and prowess around the wrestling ring.
After her wrestling career ended Chyna struggled to battle addictions to pharmaceuticals and cocaine amongst other drugs and alcohol. She appeared on Howard Stern slurring during her interview and also was featured in Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2008 denying she had any addiction. She would later be rushed to the hospital for several overdoses on sleeping pills and was known to self-inflict harm on herself by cutting.
Chyna struggled to get her career back to the levels it was during her prime as Women’s Wrestling Champion of the world. She would go on to star in several adult films including the 2004 sex tape, 1 Night in Chyna, starring her then boyfriend and former wrestler Sean Walktman, aka X-Pac. She also would star in several straight to video B rate flicks that were less than well received by film critics.
She retired from making adult films in 2013 and moved to Japan to teach English for a time. Upon her return in 2015 she seemed to be feeling optimistic and with a newfound sense of hope and purpose. She instead seems to have maybe fallen back into her old habits. Despite no illegal drugs being found in her apartment at the time of her death, there were several prescription bottles of medicine in her home. She also released a strange video just days before her death looking somewhat frazzled while making a smoothie.
Fans are demanding that she be posthumously inducted into the WWE hall of fame due to her impact and overall contributions to the sport. Former boyfriend Paul Levesque better known by his stage name Triple H went on record as echoing the sentiments of the people. He would go on to say, “There was never anybody like her before her, and there will never be anybody like her after.” As a WWE executive he is supporting the fan’s wishes that she be given the honor.
