Teenager cum Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles is currently the darling of the American media outlets after her impressive run in the 2016 Rio Games earning several gold medals and blasting away the competition. She literally dominated in all of her events and earned her place in the hearts and minds of millions of Olympic spectators across the globe. The road to stardom was not without its opposition however.
Her story is one of overcoming trying obstacles and hardship even outside the mat. Before taking the world by storm she suffered untold tragedy and adversity before ultimately turning it all into her greatest triumph. It seems the familiar story of addiction affects everyone at some point even Olympic heroes.
It is contended that before Simone was born that her mother was abusing drugs and alcohol over the course of the term of her pregnancy with Simone. It is a sheer miracle that she did not suffer irreparable damage because of this unspeakable negligence. While her mother was busy sorting out her demons and getting clean and sober her grandparents assumed the role of taking care of Simone during her formative years.
The gossip outlet TMZ has stated that Simone’s biological mother Shannon is now celebrating 9 years clean and sober. In an NBC interview her grandparents state that they helped fill the void left by Shannon’s absence and that they tried their best to provide Simone the loving and nurturing environment it takes to raise an eventual Olympic champion.
Shannon has lashed against her father’s unfair criticism of her addiction issues and motherly neglect, asserting that she was “thrown under the bus,” and that he could have been more “classy” in his assessment of the overall situation.
It just goes to show you that the underlying roots of addiction are far-ranging and deep-seated. The family dynamics are often front and center in determining whether or not a person turns to drugs and alcohol to cope with life’s pressures.
Addiction is Surmountable
Despite the traumatic childhood experiences with addiction Simone is a testament to the enduring spirit of a champion and the triumph over life’s struggles. We all have the capacity to do great things even in the midst of seemingly hopeless and insurmountable odds. Simone is a great example of not letting her less than stellar family circumstances weigh her down.
People in recovery can use Simone Biles legacy as fuel to inspire them to victory against drugs and alcohol. Even her mother was able to eventually get clean and go on to play a more active role in her life, even though for the majority of it she was absent. The moral of the story is that is never too late to fix your life and get back on the right track.
