Florida

The Sunshine State of Florida may well in fact be considered the international drug mecca of the world stage in many ways.  With a population of 16.4 million it is the fourth most populated state in the nation.  It is the source of so much ingress and egress of drugs in constant circulation throughout the state and well beyond its borders into the wider nation.  It is home to notorious amounts of shady pill mills and pain management clinics dispensing medication in less than unsavory methods.  Phony doctors with spurious licenses the state is a haven for fraudulent activity centering exclusively around the prescription drug industry and big pharma as well as illegal drug cartels.

Many geographically distinct areas of Florida such as Miami were constructed from the ground up from proceeds from the cocaine trade in the early 80’s.  Drugs coming from the medellin drug cartel and Pablo Escobar made their way into the port of miami to be distributed throughout the entire southeastern territories. There is virtually no shortage of supply between the government subsidized healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical corporations and the rogue agents of world crime rings.  The ethnic diversity and melting pot is home to a large assortment  demographics as well as representatives from a large concentration of southern and central american territories and countries.  The following ethnic groups comprise a large strata of the economic picture of south florida.

  • Haitians
  • Jamaicans
  • Cubans
  • Mexicans
  • Dominicans
  • Colombians

Florida has a very active seaports and airline terminals that assist the passage of 36 million passenger arrivals and departures daily and this type of constant movement ensures easy transition and flow of drugs.  With so much potential for distraction from the constant bombardment of people and cargo it is relatively easy for professional drug organizations to take advantage of hysteria that comes with that level of activity changing hands daily.  Drugs are smuggled through domestic and international postal carriers, auto/transport conduits and via the air and maritime sea. Government officials intercepted and seized close to 3000 kilograms of drugs from both commercial and private aircraft and over 165 kilograms from packages in 2001.

The unique geographic composition of the Florida coast make it an extremely attractive option for traffickers pushing their product undetected.  8000 miles of unfettered access to coastline destinations as drop-offs provide the ideal backdrop for multi-million dollar drug deals being consummated with frequent regularity.  Crack rock and powder cocaine as well as heroin have always been synonymous with the drug climate here, but more recently we’ve seen the addition of a few more surprise crash guests to the party.  Methamphetamine derivatives like Crystal Meth are commonplace here as are benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium.  Methadone is another highly abused substance seen more and more in the Sunshine State.  The most recent scourge to come blistering onto the scene in unprecedented levels has been the torrent of opioid abuse in routinely prescribed medications like Oxycodone and Oxycontin.

Increasing amounts of designer drug and research chemicals are also finding their way into the state discussion at record speeds.  Numerous overdose cases attributed to substances like Flakka and bath salts are being reported with meteoric frequency.  They’re freely flowing throughout the state from a myriad of online drug vendors based out of the country and even within.  Spice is another substance of this ilk that is killing kids left and right.

Marijuana is something that has also begun to proliferate in exponential measures.  Since the state has begun to show interest in attempts to reform legislation pertaining to the legality of marijuana, there have been marijuana grow operations positioning themselves in the event of changes to the law that would reverse the penalties and risk associated with the cannabis market.  Various interests are already firmly in place ready to pounce at the change to operate with a license so they have begun to do so illegally and thus we’ve seen more amounts of marijuana than ever before in the state of Florida.  To recap Florida has a serious problem with the following illegal substances.

  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth)
  • Marijuana
  • Bath Salts (Flakka, Spice, K2)
  • Oxycodone
  • Oxycontin
  • Xanax
  • Valium
  • Methadone
  • Heroin
  • MDMA (Ecstasy)
  • Crack
